Jed Goldberg, CRPS® and I sat down at Hone Coworks a few weeks ago and he wanted to show me how he helps families in business together. He showed me a checklist of concerns he and Edgewood Advisors review with business owners to ensure they think through succession planning scenarios.
When I approached a financial planner 16 years ago, as I entered the business, I asked “how can I invest some of my paycheck”. His response was “let me talk to you about life insurance”. There was no listening, no conversation, it was straight to the pitch.
I wish I had met Jed and his team many years ago to help our family work through the challenging conversations of succession and business ownership. But without listening first and understanding, it is not possible to get there.
